Before forming Toto its members, they worked as session musicians for Steely Dan[3] Seals and Crofts[4] Boz Skaggs and Sonny and Cher. [5] Guitarist Steve Lukather was the band's lead singer.
About Toto
The group Toto was formed in 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro and David Paich (who were also highly acclaimed studio musicians who worked with Boz Scaggs at the time) as well as bassist/singer Bobby Kimball. Their name is derived from the Latin word meaning "all inclusive," the group was determined to explore every musical style.
In 1981, Toto's third album Turn Back was a complete failure, but they rebound with their fourth album Isolation that features two hits, including the title track and Roseanna. The album and their tour made them a household brand all over the world.
After a hiatus of a couple of years, Toto return with the album Fahrenheit in 1986. It marks a step away from the ballads that were featured on previous albums and includes some heavy rock. This was their first platinum album in North America.
During the recording process of the fifth album the group loses their manager and faces financial difficulties. They decide to change their name and make a new album using a new producer. Joseph Williams, the son of John Williams, the legendary film composer and actress Barbara Ruick from 1950s, is now replacing Fergie Frederiksen as lead singer. Joseph Williams is a natural frontman and provides the band with a much-needed boost.
The band releases Mindfields in 1999 and embarks on a major tour across the globe. After several weeks in Europe, the band heads to Japan for sold-out shows. After a short hiatus, Toto resumes their recording and releases their first live album, Absolutely Live in 1993. This includes a cover version of Weezer's song Hash Pipe as a response to the band's coverage of Africa on their recent tour. Toto's touring band includes drummer Lenny Castro and bassist Shannon Forrest along with keyboardist Shem Von Schroeck.

The following year, Toto toured with Ringo Starr's All Starr Band. This was the final time that all original Toto members Toto were on stage together. Following this, the band was again disbanded. However, Toto reunited in 2010 to benefit the ALS Foundation. It was the first time in over 31 year that all of Toto's original members were on stage together. The original group was joined by keyboardist Greg Tambu who filled in for Paich, and bassist David Hungate who filled in for Shem von Schroeck.

Toto has remained one of the most popular rock bands for over three decades, scoring megahits such as "Rosanna," "Hold The Line," and their 8X-platinum smash, "Africa." The band's anthemic arena-rock is inspired by a variety of styles that include progressive rock, world rhythms, jazz, and soul.
The band was hit with numerous setbacks in their later times, despite their fame. In 2002 keyboardist David Paich and drummer Greg Phillinganes were forced to take a medical leave of absence. Shem von Schröeck was brought in to replace him however, the group wasn't the same without Paich or Phillinganes. In 2008, Toto decided to take a break from touring after a string lineup changes and a disappointing series of releases. The group returned to touring in 2012 after the release of their album 40 Trips Around The Sun.
The album was a return to the band's best form and the tour that went with it featured sold-out shows in North America and Europe. Toto's reunion gained momentum with the return of bassist Shem Von Schroeck and guitarist Steve Lukather.
